Description

On November 28, 2016, a new section of the Atamyrat – Imamnazar (Turkmenistan) – Akina (Afghanistan) railroad was officially opened. The total length of this section is 88 km, of which 85 km are on the territory of Turkmenistan and 3 km are on the territory of Afghanistan. The new border crossing Imamnazar – Akina is the second border railway crossing between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan (after Serhetabat – Turgundi) and allows direct delivery of goods by rail from Turkmenistan to Afghanistan, bypassing Uzbekistan.

In the near future, it is planned to build the next section of the Afghan railroad from Akina station to Andkhoy station, and later to extend the section. The total length of the new route Atamyrat – Imamnazar – Akina – Andkhoy – Lower Panj will be about 400 kilometers. The planned cost of the project is estimated at 400 million US dollars.
